26th February, 2026 marked a significant milestone for Japaflex as we successfully hosted the Mind, Money and Machines event at the Victoria Building in Middlesbrough. The gathering brought together founders, professionals, students, and members of the wider community for an evening focused on personal wellbeing, economic empowerment, and the role of technology in shaping our collective future. More than just an event, it was a reflection of Japaflex’s mission; creating spaces where people navigating change, migration, and new beginnings can find knowledge, connection, and support.

The event opened with a welcome address and presentation delivered by Japaflex founder, Ajibola Agbaje, who introduced attendees to the vision behind the platform. In his opening remarks, he spoke about the growing reality of human displacement across the world. Increasing migration driven by economic shifts, education, global mobility, and climate-related factors means more people are starting life over in unfamiliar environments. He highlighted how relocation often comes with hidden challenges: loneliness, lack of reliable information, cultural adjustment, and difficulty accessing trusted networks. Japaflex, he explained, was created to address these challenges by helping diasporans and newcomers find community, local knowledge, and opportunities in their new cities. The presentation set the tone for the evening, framing the discussions around resilience, empowerment, and adaptation in a rapidly changing world.

The first segment of the evening, The Mind, focused on mental health and emotional wellbeing, an essential but often overlooked aspect of migration and personal transition. This session was led by Dr. Coleen Mercer-Quinn and Eva Quinn, a mother-and-daughter duo from Reflect Health Hub Practice in Yarm. Their discussion explored mental health through a compassionate and practical lens, addressing resilience, emotional awareness, and strategies for coping during periods of uncertainty and change. They spoke candidly about the psychological pressures individuals face when adjusting to new environments, careers, or life stages, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection, support systems, and proactive mental health practices. Their session resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom could relate to the emotional complexities of navigating life away from familiar support networks.

The event then transitioned into The Money segment, where Ade Ampitan, founder of Descinder, delivered an insightful presentation on employability and economic empowerment. Ade shared practical perspectives on navigating today’s job market, highlighting the skills and mindset required to remain competitive in an evolving professional landscape. He also introduced attendees to the Descinder platform, demonstrating how technology can bridge gaps between talent and opportunity. His session emphasized the importance of positioning oneself strategically in the labour market, particularly for individuals building careers in new regions or industries. By connecting employability with personal growth, the discussion reinforced the idea that financial stability is a critical pillar of successful integration and long-term wellbeing.

The final segment, The Machines, looked toward the future. Stuart Davies, founder of SWAIN and MOBIX Technology, delivered a forward-thinking talk on technology, artificial intelligence, and the changing nature of work. He explored how AI is reshaping industries, redefining skills requirements, and creating both opportunities and challenges for workers worldwide. His presentation encouraged attendees to view technological change not as a threat, but as a tool for innovation and adaptability. By demystifying AI and discussing its real-world applications, Stuart helped participants understand how emerging technologies can empower individuals and communities when approached with curiosity and preparedness.

To conclude the evening, attendees participated in an interactive trivia session hosted directly within the Japaflex app. The activity showcased the platform’s community engagement features while creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere. Winners were selected and awarded Japaflex merchandise, ending the program on a celebratory and communal note that reflected the spirit of connection the platform aims to foster.

The success of the Mind, Money and Machines event was made possible through collaboration and community support. Refreshments for the evening were generously sponsored by Abdul’s Cash and Carry, Middlesbrough, whose contribution helped create a welcoming and comfortable environment for all attendees. Special appreciation also goes to the Enterprise Unit at Teesside University, particularly Scott Watson, whose support played a key role in making the event possible.

As global mobility continues to increase and societies become more interconnected, initiatives like this serve as important reminders that community, knowledge, and collaboration remain essential foundations for thriving in new environments.

The Mind, Money and Machines event was not just a successful gathering; it was another step toward building stronger, more connected communities, the very future Japaflex exists to create.
